Women making themselves hard targets in North Park

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Women are adding some physical armor to their safety kit in a free self defense class in North Park.

“Its empowering, girl power,” says North Park resident Patricia Killion.

More than 60 women joined a free self defense class Wednesday at the North Park Community Rec Center to learn Krav Maga, a technique taught to military in Israel.

The super-hero crime fighting group, Xtreme Justice League hosted the class that was trained by Krav Maga Academy in San Diego.

“They are going to send a message to these knuckleheads that hey don't mess with me,” said Mr. Xtreme.

On Monday, San Diego police arrested David A. Drake, 23, involving the six attacks on women in North Park since June. Witnesses describe there were two men working together and only one suspect caught.

Two San Diego State students were assaulted off-campus. Men are creeping into homes in Pacific Beach attempting to assault women.

Women know this isn't over and it can happen anywhere.

“Confidence and knowing what to do instead of freaking out and being silent and not doing anything,” said Samantha Hurov.

The women in the class may not know each other but they do share the same mindset.

“We are not people who lie down and take it anymore,” said Killion.

Suspect David Drake is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday. He faces 19 charges involving assault and sexual assault on women. He is being held on $855,000 bond.

Some of the footage used in the above video report was shot using a GoPro camera.
