OCEANSIDE (CBS 8) - An investigation was underway Thursday into the death of a 22-month-old boy inside an Oceanside residence where his mother was discovered unconscious in another room, police said.

Officers were dispatched to the residence in the 300 block of Woodpark Way near Fireside Street at about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Oceanside police say a grandmother called 911, after she discovered a toddler dead and his mother unconscious in the apartment.

When police and emergency crews arrived, they immediately gave the 22-month-old boy CPR. However, the toddler did not survive and was declared dead at the scene.

His 28-year-old mother was found lethargic and unconscious in a different room downstairs. She was taken to Tri-City Medical Center for treatment.

Officers say there was no sign of a break in and now they are investigating the death as a homicide.

"There was no forced entry," Lt. George Durrah with Oceanside Police said.

Neighbors in the area reported hearing shrill screams during the incident.

"Every time I saw her with her baby they were smiling. At first we heard it was the flu. I don't know if they're saying she neglected her baby. It's a sad situation. We don't think she would harm him," neighbor, Dionne Elliott said.

Additional details and autopsy on the toddler are pending.
