Future uncertain for one of Jeff's favorite spots

LEUCADIA (CBS 8) - It's one of Leucadia's favorite sandwich shops, after opening its doors almost four decades ago. We're talking about Sub Palace, the bright yellow building on Highway 101.

The people who have been running it for the past 15 years are retiring, and they're looking for a good buyer to keep it going.

Since 1975, Leucadians have been lunching at Sub Palace.

"They are the best sub sandwiches around," customer Jennifer Stone said.

This has been Jennifer's mom and pop sub shop for decades.

"It's been around since I was a kid. My sister and I would grab sandwiches and go to the beach," she said.

Which is just what I did as a Leucadia kid. Surfing and skateboarding sessions always ended with a Beef Gobbler.

Tim Yargeau also grew up in Leucadia. He loved Sub Palace so much, his parents bought the shop in 2000.

"Yep that is exactly why we wanted to carry on the tradition and be part of something special," he said.

Tim's parents Ray and Anna Lee say it's time to retire. In fact, they are in Hawaii right now relaxing.

"It is time. My parents want to travel more. I want to focus on my other interests," Tim said.

Locals love the Sub Palace vibe just as much as the food, with snapped surfboards on the wall and 50 cent key chains. Where else can you buy a $1.50 lei?

"I don't want to see all of these kind of places disappear," customer Tim Connelly said.

Connelly just drove 20 miles out of his way for a Sub Palace sandwich.

"They are the best, by far. They're the best sub sandwich, not just in Encinitas, I'd say in San Diego," he said.

I grew up strong on Sub Palace, and customer Allison Manja-Fico wants the next North County generation to do the same.

"We need someone to come and rescue Sub Palace," she said.
