New "smart oven" heating up the high-tech kitchen

A new oven is heating up the competition when it comes to luxury kitchen appliances.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A new oven is heating up the competition when it comes to luxury kitchen appliances.

The high-tech oven is the first of its kind, and is featured in a brand new, $4.9 million home on the market in La Jolla.

Dacor's IQ oven is designed to keep you connected to your kitchen so that you have more freedom. It features a built-in tablet where you can actually download apps, games, video and watch Netflix. And since this is an oven, there's a cooking app as well that comes with a cooking guide.

You can make a beef tri-tip, with your fingertip. All you do is press start and wait for the timer, or the text, telling you that dinner is done.

"You can actually cook a full meal in there. You can cook your tenderloin, your vegetables, bread at the same time, and there's not going to be any flavor transfer," Dacor chef Stephen Hualde said.

Hualde says making Thanksgiving dinner in this wider-than-average 30-inch convection oven is a breeze.

"You can cook your two 20-pound turkeys in there at the same time, it's going to sear the outside of it. All at the same time, side by side. They'll be nice and golden brown," he said.

"It offers a lot of convenience for the luxury homebuyer with a busy lifestyle. You can remotely operate your oven when you're in the checkout line, you can get your oven preheating so the time you get home you're ready to go," Michael West of Dacor said.

Dinner time is crunch time for a lot of families, so you can put pizza in the oven before you leave the house, then use your smartphone to turn the oven on before you head back home.

Now if only they could make a smart dishwasher.

The Dacor IQ wall oven costs $4,300. And for the professional chef, it fits three racks of commercial cookie sheets.
