OCEANSIDE (CNS) - An Oceanside woman remained jailed Saturday following a confession that she drowned her 22-month-old son, police said.

Veronica Rivas, 28, confessed Friday to drowning her infant son inside a residence in the 300 block of Woodpark Way on Wednesday, Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Cosby said.

Police were dispatched to the residence about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday and attempted to resuscitate the child, who was ultimately declared dead at the scene.

Rivas was found in a downstairs room unconscious and unresponsive and was taken to Tri-City Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Cosby said.

Police announced Thursday the death was being investigated as a homicide and there was no sign of forced entry at the residence.

Rivas was arrested at Tri-City Medical Center Friday after she confessed to drowning her son, Cosby said. She was taken into custody at the Oceanside Police Department.

Rivas was being held Saturday at the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of murder charges and was scheduled to be arraigned 1:30 p.m. Monday at the North Division Court in Vista, according to the sheriff's office.
