Mira Mesa bank robbery suspect sought

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The FBI and local law enforcement agencies are on the lookout Sunday for "El Chapparito Bandit," a man whose weekend heist in Mira Mesa was his latest in a string of 15 bank robberies.

The most recent robbery occurred Saturday about 2:30 p.m. when the suspect entered the Wells Fargo bank at 10707 Camino Ruiz, simulated a gun under his shirt with his thumb and forefinger and yelled "hands up everyone," FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth said.

"The robber went to one teller who was in the middle of helping a bank customer," Foxworth said. "The robber then went to the teller next to the first teller and demanded money.

"After receiving a sum of money from the second teller, the robber went back to the first teller and collected an additional sum of money."

The robber then placed the money in a bag he was carrying and walked out of the bank headed west through the parking lot towards Camino Ruiz, said San Diego police Officer Frank Cali. No weapon was seen and no injuries reported.

Foxworth said the suspect was "believed to be identical" to the robber known as "El Chapparito Bandit" who has robbed 15 banks.

"El Chapparito Bandit" is described as either Asian or Hispanic, in his mid 20s, between 5 feet 3 and 5 feet 7. During Saturday's robbery he wore a blue baseball cap, dark sunglasses, a white scarf or bandana covering his face, a blue hooded jacket, yellow gloves, blue jeans and dark shoes.

Anyone with information was asked to call the FBI at (858) 320-1800 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
