Bank robbery suspect arrested after chase

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A bank robbery suspect was in custody Saturday after he led police on a chase from Clairemont to Midway, crashed into a police cruiser and another vehicle, and tried to run away barefoot.

Police located the suspect's vehicle, a gray Nissan truck or SUV, and attempted to stop it a short time after the 1:41 p.m. holdup at a Wells Fargo branch at 5522 Balboa Ave., where a man demanded money from a teller and was given an undisclosed amount.

The suspect led police southbound on Interstate 5 and exited in the Midway District, where he led police on a chase over surface streets and parking lots in the area of Sports Arena Boulevard, Midway Drive and Kemper Street.

He initially collided with a police cruiser at Sports Arena Boulevard and East Drive, then continued before crashing into another vehicle at the Sports Arena Boulevard offramp of Interstate 8, San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick said.

The suspect then fled on foot, without shoes, and was arrested on the offramp.

No injuries were reported as a result of the robbery or the pursuit.

At one point in the chase, the suspect threw something out of a window while on southbound Interstate 5, just north of SeaWorld Drive.

The conclusion of the chase caused traffic to back up on westbound Interstate 8 from Sunset Cliffs to Hotel Circle.
