30th annual Coastal Cleanup Day in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It's called San Diego's largest volunteer event and Saturday, hundreds of volunteers participated in the 30th annual Coastal Cleanup Day.

San Diegans, including local council members and SDG&E employees, gathered at more than 100 locations around San Diego County to help beautify the community.

I Love a Clean San Diego and SDG&E partnered to host the event. Volunteers did things like storm drain stenciling, plant removal, native planting and graffiti removal and of course, pick up trash.

"You find everything from tires to styrofoam, to plastic cups, to bottles of glass and what you're doing is you're basically beautifying the environment," Mitch Mitchell said.

At the downtown harbor cleanup location, scuba divers were able to collect more than 1,000 pounds of trash and debris.

Fish and Wildlife, Coastal Commission, City of Del Mar, and the Conservancy also came together to make the event possible.
