SANTEE (CBS 8) - Talk about teeing up for a lot of green! Hopeful golfers tested their luck Monday at a $1 million hole-in-one shootout in Santee.

It's an annual event held at the Carlton Oaks Golf Course.

More than a dozen golfers gave it a swing Monday morning. Some came close -- but not close enough. The closest hitter didn't go home empty handed -- he got two roundtrip Southwest Airlines tickets to travel anywhere.

Oscar Lopez came the closest out of all participants. His ball landed 26 feet, 9 1/2 inches away from the hole.

This whole event is a fundraiser for the Holiday Bowl. Participants had to qualify to get a chance at Monday's finals.

The qualifying rounds happened over the course of 10 days at Stadium Golf, near Qualcomm stadium. Every hole-in-one they got in the qualifier rounds, earned them one swing in the finals Monday.

Oscar Lopez actually got three hole-in-ones during the qualifying period, giving him three tries to in the $1 million hole-in-one shootout.

It was his third try, and a change from a 9 iron to a 7 iron, that got his ball the closest to the hole Monday.

It was a 170 yard shot and, again, his ball landed 26 feet and 9 1/2 inches away. He says he's been golfing for 10 years and has never gotten a hole-in-one during an actual game.

This is actually not Lopez' first time winning. Five years ago, he was also the closest shot -- that was also the same day his daughter Mia was born.

She actually was presented with a set of baby golf clubs during the Holiday Bowl. Dad is hoping maybe she will be the one to finally win that $1 million hole-in-one prize some day.

This is the 26th year that no one has won the $1 million dollar prize.
