Carlsbad woman accused in husband's murder takes the stand

VISTA (CBS 8) – Prosecutors say she shot her husband in cold blood while her three children watched TV downstairs, but Julie Harper claims it was self-defense. On Monday, she took the stand to describe her crumbling marriage.

Jason Harper, a Carlsbad High School math teacher, died in August 2012 at the couple's home. Prosecutors say Julie Harper, 41, waited a day and a half before turning herself in with her lawyer and father at his Scripps Ranch home.

On Monday Julie Harper testified, painting a picture of a verbally battered wife who talked about how the abuse went beyond words when her husband would force her to have sex.

"He yanked my bottoms down, slammed me up against the wall. I said 'Stop, what are you doing? Stop,'" she said.

The defense also played a cell phone video of a fight between the two showing an angry Jason Harper yelling at his wife about money issues.
