Getting ready for Sir Paul and concert traffic

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A double header of traffic is expected this Sunday -- as the Chargers take on the Jacksonville Jaguars at Qualcomm Stadium. Then, Sir Paul McCartney rocks the house at Petco, in his first San Diego concert in decades.

But if you plan to drive your car to Sunday's sold-out Paul McCartney concert at Petco Park -- be forewarned.

Navigating traffic and finding parking will be almost as challenging as scoring tickets to Sir Paul's first performance in San Diego since 1976.

Making it especially tough, the fact the Chargers will be playing at home earlier the same day, creating a perfect storm for traffic tie-ups.

"It will be crazy -- probably 50,000 or more people tooling around downtown."

Michael Scalise -- a longtime Beatles fan who works as an editor at CBS News 8 -- managed to get field-level seats at Sunday's concert. He had originally planned to park at Qualcomm Stadium and take the trolley over to Petco Park.

“But then I discovered there's going to be a football game -- so I changed my mind right then and there," Scalise said.

In fact, trolley parking at Qualcomm Stadium won't be available until 6 p.m., or later because of the game. But there is help available for getting to Petco Park Sunday, starting with additional trolley service before and after the concert.

To save time and speed up the boarding process, you can buy and store your trolley passes through the free mTicket app on your smartphone.

If you do plan to drive, arrive early to find parking. You can pre-purchase parking permits online at padres.com to guarantee a spot at Petco Park. Another 2,500 spaces will also be available at the Convention Center and Hilton Bayfront on Harbor Drive.

As for Michael Scalise, he's opting for Uber to get to Petco Park, and will most likely have a lot of company, "It's worth the extra bucks -- enjoy the day and have a good time with Paul."

And if you're new to Uber and want to use it for this Sunday's concert, Uber is offering a $20 discount for new users who sign up for an Uber account and use the promotional code “petco concert.”
