CORONADO (CBS 8) - A motorcade assignment went terribly wrong Monday for two San Diego Police Department motorcycle officers, who were injured when they collided on Coronado.

They were escorting Slovak President Andrej Kiska through Coronado when the crash happened at about 7:45 a.m. several miles south of the Hotel Del Coronado.

According to police the two officers were attempting to perform a "leap frog" maneuver when something went wrong.

"During a motorcade what happens is we have a motor officer and they will pull in front of the motorcade to take intersections so the motorcade can have clear passage through the interstion without having to stop," SDPD Lt. Steve Hutchinson explained.

Crews transported both officers to the hospital. One sustained moderate injures, and the other had minor injuries. The crash left both motorcycles heavily damaged, with debris scattered all over the roadway.

It turns out this was the second mishap involving the Slovakian president. On Sunday, Kiska and 10 others were trapped inside an elevator at Loews Coronado Bay Resort for over an hour before they were rescued.
