Onramp reopened after object found near Grossmont Center

LA MESA (CBS 8) - A bomb scare caused major traffic delays in La Mesa Monday morning.

Caltrans workers found a suspicious device on the Grossmont Center Drive onramp to eastbound Interstate 8 just before 10:30 a.m.

California Highway Patrol officers closed the ramp and called in the bomb squad, so that a robot could investigate the suspicious object.

"It was just a bunch of D batteries taped together inside newspapers with wires hanging off of it, and the scene was declared safe after noon today," CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein said.

Investigators say it looks like someone planted the device on purpose and are now looking into who may have placed it there.
