Pink hard hats worn to form giant pink ribbon

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Breast Cancer Awareness Month starts on Wednesday, and to celebrate, a giant pink ribbon is being formed at the UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center construction site.

About 650 construction workers and hospital employees are donning pink hard hats. It's the largest human pink hard hat ribbon formed in California, and it's sending a huge message about the importance of protecting yourself by getting screened for breast cancer.

It's part of Emcor's sixth annual "Protect Yourself, Get Screened Today" campaign, but the first time the campaign has come to San Diego.

UC San Diego's new Jacobs Medical Center broke ground in 2012 and should be opening in 2016. There will be 108 beds, doubling the current number of beds for cancer patients. The cost was about $200 million, paid for, in part, by state funds, philanthropy and other sources.

This new hospital, dedicated to cancer treatment will feature a comprehensive breast cancer center.

The pink helmets will be worn by construction workers through the month of October.
