Council declares October "Domestic Violence Awareness Month"

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The City Council Tuesday declared October to be "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" in the city of San Diego.

"Domestic violence is not a private matter and it should not ever be hidden," Councilwoman Myrtle Cole said.

The problem impacts victims, families and society as a whole, she said.

"With the recent events of high-profile domestic violence incidents being reported on the news, there is no better time than now to make a declaration against this type of abusive behavior," Cole said.

She and council colleague Marti Emerald lauded the San Diego Family Justice Center, which provides support for domestic violence victims.

Throughout October, a public service announcement will run on the City TV channel informing victims of available services.

According to a recent study by the San Diego Association of Governments, 8,331 domestic violence reports were logged by law enforcement throughout San Diego County in the first half of this year, up 4 percent from the same period last year. However, that number is 2 percent lower than the first six months of 2010.
