Escondido residents discuss toxic clean-up

ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) - Escondido residents met with city officials Tuesday night to discuss the clean-up of toxic chemicals near Felicita Creek.

Crews have been cleaning up the Chatham Brothers Barrel Yard in the 2200 block of Bernardo Avenue for almost four decades.

But many residents say the clean-up hasn't been thorough enough and the toxins are now leaching into nearby waterways. It's a claim the city denies.

"The geologists and hazmat and the biologists, they have all concluded that it is not only safe, but the process that is being currently followed is one of the most successful that we could have hoped for,” said Escondido City Councilmember Mike Morasco.

More than 11,000 tons of highly toxic soil have been removed from the site and a groundwater treatment system is now in place.
