Taking part in International Walk to School Day

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Many parents across the county got to sleep in a little Wednesday, as they let their children walk to school.

Over 50 local schools took part in International Walk to School Day. The event encourages parents to let their children walk or bike to school to help raise awareness of physical activity. Among the schools participating Wednesday was Holmes Elementary in Clairemont.

"Just trying to encourage more parents to take advantage of a free way to get to school and reduce emissions in the environment and improve the safety of our school," Holmes Elementary Principal Jonathan Saipe said.

Students from Holmes met at Clairemont Covenant Church and walked the half-mile together.

The event was organized by SANDAG's iCommute program.
