Revamped street repair program underway

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Some well-worn streets in Rancho Penasquitos are receiving much-need repairs Thursday.

Crews are using new equipment that improves the repair process for longer lasting fixes. That means they can make emergency repairs on short stretches of road.

Thursday Councilman Mark Kersey held a news conference near Paseo Montalban in Rancho Penasquitos to talk about added funding and new equipment for city street repair crews.

Since Tuesday, crews have been grinding down and repaving that street using a new grinder that allows them to make emergency repairs to certain sections of roadways.

The Mt. Carmel Marching Band holds its annual Battle of the Bands Competition on Paseo Montalban every year, and year after year they have to contend with potholes, that is until now.

"This is about moving from a reactive standpoint to a proactive standpoint," said John Helminski, the Deputy Director of the Street Division. "Potholes come up during rainy season. If we can get in and mill and pave, then we don't have to come back year after year and repatch potholes."

Work on Paseo Montalban will continue through Friday. The roadway will be closed during the day and opened at night.
