Grant pays for new electric carts in Balboa Park

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – It's an important donation that will help improve safety at Balboa Park.

The San Diego police now have two electric carts, thanks to a grant provided by the San Diego Police Foundation through Las Patronas, a local philanthropic organization. The new carts replace two other carts that are about 10 years old.

San Diego police Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol will use the carts in their daily patrols at the park. They not only patrol there, but at the San Diego Zoo parking lot, where car break-ins occur.

The carts cost about $10,000 each. RSVP Officer Jacqueline Schouten told CBS News 8 driving in one of the new carts is like riding on a cloud compared to a semi truck.

"Oh, this means the world to us. We're in heaven," she said.

Volunteers say they will still keep the old carts, but only use them from time to time.
