Donny and Alyssa's success story

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A local couple set out to adopt one child, but just couldn't say no to taking in two.

Siblings Donny and Alyssa were matched with their forever family about a year and a half ago, but as you'll see they've already experienced a lifetime of love, with the mom and dad they are so grateful to call their own.

Ten-year-old Donny and his nine-year-old sister Alyssa know just how fortunate they are.

The biological siblings don't remember many details of their life in foster care, but do remember how they felt. They say they felt bad and sad and mad.

But a year and a half ago, all of that changed, when they were matched with their forever family. Now they describe their life as wonderful.

“It was challenging at first because we were new parents but, to two, but It was great. A lot of hard work but these guys are like little diamonds in the rough,” said Candie.

Robert and Candie say adoption just seemed like a natural choice.

We had a really successful experience. Learning about it on Channel 8 and then going through the county,” Candie continued.

And after taking classes through San Diego County Adoptions, they requested to adopt just one child:

“They give you a check list, so we made our list, as open as we can, diverse as we can, didn't say no to a lot of things. We didn't wait long,” explained Robert.

And they couldn't say no, to this brother-sister pair, now in the fourth and fifth grades.

“Even though we were new parents, they're older kids, they could tell us what they needed. I'm hungry, I'm tired, I need this,” said Robert.

“We feel blessed that we have them, and they are just doing amazing and we couldn't be any more prouder of the kids they are and who they were and who they are now. And we just hope they continue to grow and become great kids and yeah, we feel lucky,” added Candie.

And Donny and Alyssa feel the same way about their mom and dad.
