6 displaced after Egger Highlands house fire

SAN DIEGO (CNS/CBS 8) - An electrical fire at an Egger Highlands neighborhood home left six people displaced and caused around $400,000 in damage, fire officials said Friday.

The fire at the single-story home at 1868 Elm Ave. was reported around 11:45 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Lee Swanson.

Crews had the fire knocked down around midnight, and one person was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, Swanson said.

"All I see is the rims of the door is black coming out. So I call my boyfriend and I say, 'it's burning come to it.' He was outside and comes inside and breaks the lock... We both see the fire and when we open the door the smoke just comes out to us," Irma Gastelum said.

The family says an electrical power strip connected to an iPhone and iPod somehow caught fire in a bedroom.

The fire left five adults and an infant in need of temporary housing, and caused $300,000 in damage to the property and $100,000 in damage to its contents, Swanson said.
