Hearing canceled for former school administrator accused of molestation

He's been behind bars for more than a year, and bail is set at $6 million. A former Carlsbad military school administrator accused of molestation is in court Friday to try to get out of jail.

VISTA (CBS 8) - The lawyers representing a former Carlsbad school administrator accused of molestation made a surprising move in court Friday.

Jeffrey Barton is being held on $6 million bail. He was supposed to be in court Friday to try and get that bail amount reduced. However, Barton's lawyers canceled the hearing just moments before it was scheduled to start.

Several of Barton's alleged victims were scheduled to make statements and his lawyers say they were concerned that they wouldn't be able to cross-examine them

"We made a judgment call based on our inability to respond to certain statements that were made, based on the likelihood that even a bail reduction of a significant amount might not be enough to make a difference," defense attorney Dan Greene said.

Barton is the former head of the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad. He's accused of molesting seven boys at three different boarding schools over three decades.
