Success story: Local family adopts a second child

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The local couple you're about to meet always wanted a girl and a boy. Now their wish has come true.

The terrible twos are quite tolerable, when you've waited a decade to have a child.

"We've been married for over 10 years, and we didn't have any kids, so we decided that we were ready for a kid no matter what," adoptive father Ruben said.

When we first met Ruben and Griselda five years ago, their son Kevin was two years old. He had been placed in their home as an infant and seemed pretty comfortable being an only child. When his parents talked about adopting again, Kevin wasn't too thrilled. But that was then, and this is now.

It's clear Kevin adores his little sister, and as a big brother, it's his job to translate.

"This is my sister Ashley, and I love her so much, she's the best sister ever," he said.

"It melts your heart to see how our son and our daughter how they love each other, how they always play together," Ruben said.

Ashley was matched with her forever family when she was 8 months old, and is now the same age Kevin was when we first met him. Her birthday is December 20, an extra special day in this family.

"We share the same birthday, so that's meant to be," Griselda said.

Griselda and Ruben say they are so grateful to San Diego County Adoptions for helping them start a family.

"We really liked the classes because we learned a lot," Griselda said.

They make everything easy for you, they walk you step by step. You don't have to be wealthy or rich, you don't have to own a home. We have friends and family members, some of them may own a house, some of them rent an apartment, some of them may even live in a mobile home and they're all… they all got authorized and got placements and are in the process of adoption," Ruben said.

"All you need is love, basically, and a heart. All you need is a heart, and you can do it. That's all it takes," he said.

Ruben and Griselda have the family they'd always dreamed of, with one boy and one girl. But they've had such a great experience with adoption, they may just do it again.

"My wife has been trying to convince me to maybe get another one. We'll see, but she'll probably," Ruben said.
