Students rally to keep Che Cafe at UC San Diego

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Students at UC San Diego are fighting to save an historic landmark.

At a rally Tuesday morning, protesters delivered a petition with 13,000 signatures to stop eviction procedures and keep the Che Cafe on campus. Earlier this year, the school delivered an eviction notice to the cafe, saying the building needs $700,000 in repairs.

The 34-year-old cafe is one of four student-run cooperatives trying to renegotiate its lease on campus. Cafe supporters say the facility has played an important part in student life.

"Students organized and fought for the right to have the space to create a direction for the way they want the university to be," cafe employee Rene Vera said.

The lease between the school and the Che Cafe Collective expired in 2008 and has been month-to-month since then.
