SAN DIEGO (CBS 8/CNS) - A pedestrian suffered fatal injuries Thursday when he was struck by three vehicles, including a garbage truck, on an Old Town-area street.

The Republic Services trash-collection vehicle had just exited westbound Interstate 8 when it struck the 63-year-old man in the 3600 block of Camino del Rio West about 4:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol and San Diego police. The victim was reportedly thrown 40 feet.

Moments later, a Jeep Cherokee and Honda Civic ran over the victim as he lay in the roadway. The unidentified man died at the scene.

The cause of the crash in under investigation, although early morning fog is being considered as a factor in this accident.

The ramp was closed for hours, which caused gridlock in the area. Traffic was diverted to the southbound I-5 exit.
