Lanes reopen after crane overturns on I-5 in San Clemente

Posted: Updated:
SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (CBS 8/AP) — An overturned crane on the back of a big rig slowed traffic to a crawl on Interstate 5 in south Orange County Thursday, but all lanes are open as of Friday morning.

The CHP says the truck driving on the northbound side at about 3 p.m. crashed into a center divider and fell over, sending concrete on to the southbound side and fuel across the freeway.

Southbound lanes were reopened and the fuel was cleaned up about 90 minutes after the crash, but all northbound lanes remained closed hours later and remained that way until they were reopened at 4:30 a.m. Friday. A traffic alert was in place for at least eight hours following the accident. However, traffic was allowed to pass on the freeway's shoulder.
