USS Sampson departs San Diego for western Pacific Ocean

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The guided-missile destroyer USS Sampson departed Friday from San Diego for an independent deployment to the western Pacific Ocean.

A detachment from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 35, based at Naval Air Station North Island, is joining the 509-foot ship. The squadron is making its first deployment since its formation last year.

Families lined the pier at Naval Base San Diego to say goodbye to their loved ones.

Sampson is the fourth U.S. destroyer named after Rear Adm. William Thomas Sampson, whose naval service lasted from 1857 until 1902, including command of the North Atlantic during the Spanish-American War in 1898.

The Sampson, with a crew of 380, last deployed two years ago. During that voyage, the ship escorted other vessels through the Suez Canal during a time of Middle East tensions, and also conducted exercises with other navies in Southeast Asia.
