Carlsbad residents want to save trees from removal

Posted: Updated:

CARLSBAD (CBS 8) - Carlsbad residents are taking a stand to save trees that are about to be chopped down.

City officials say they're a fire hazard during a wildfire event, and they need to be replaced with newer, healthier trees. Neighbors say they're concerned about the owls and hawks that call them home.

"This is a tree that everybody watches, because we had a little baby hawk that survived the fire, and it was like hope to some people when they came by and saw the hawk still there," resident Ruth Weimer said.

In one tree, the owls and the hawks reportedly take turns sharing a nest throughout the year to raise their young.
