Vigil honors homeless who died in San Diego

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The San Diego Rescue Mission is remembering the homeless people who lost their lives over the past year in San Diego.

The mission put on its Annual Interfaith Candlelight Vigil late Sunday afternoon and this year 56 names were read.

The CEO says, while that number is down from previous years, it's still too many.

"Many of them have mental health problems so they don't know how to come in or they don't want to come in,” said Herb Johnson with the San Diego Rescue Mission. “They're afraid of being controlled, some of them psychologically don't know how to get out of the way."

In San Diego, there are roughly 8900 people who are homeless and about 4,000 of them live on the street.
