PETA wants records of horses that died at Del Mar

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Just days before the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club opens for November racing, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is demanding to see the veterinary records of the 16 horses that died during the summer meet at the racetrack.

The animal advocacy group wants to know if horses with underlying conditions or pre-existing injuries were forced to race when they should have been resting. PETA claims some horses are being given drugs to get them back on the track.

In a statement, Del Mar says the necropsies are public record and available for review, and that track surface conditions did not contribute to the break-downs. The club also says it is working with industry bodies to come up with a race-day medication standard.

The California Horse Racing Board says it is looking into PETA's concerns.
