Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The loved ones of three murder victims are speaking out about the investigation launched on Christmas Eve outside Mission Valley Mall.

The families of Salvatore and Gianni Belvedere and Ilona Filnt released a joint statement Thursday morning. They thanked the community for their support and commended San Diego law enforcement for their efforts.

A judge ruled suspect Carlo Mercado is mentally incompetent to stand trial. Instead, he'll spend up to three years in a state mental facility.

Criminal proceedings are suspended.
