Series of suspicious fires under investigation

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Arson investigators are trying to figure out if the same person set six different fires in Chollas Creek.

On Monday night, the suspected arsonist set two different fires in a canyon behind an apartment complex at the 4100 block of 50th Street, destroying a palm tree and a fence.

Firefighters and police were at the scene where dozens were evacuated, including families and children after one of the fires burned a power line, leaving many residents temporarily without power.

Around 12:20 a.m. Tuesday morning, a second fire started at 54th Street and University Avenue burning some brush. Then a recycling container was torched at the 5200 block of Rex avenue.

The latest fired happened at the 5200 block of Landis Street where a garbage container was set on fire. It destroyed two trailers used to haul items.

All the fires happened over the course of six hours within a one-mile radius.

"All these different fires... it doesn't make sense. It's ridiculous," resident Donna Lipscomb said.
