SAN DIEGO ( CBS 8 ) - Police have identified the driver responsible for a deadly crash on the northbound 5 early Friday morning and say he will face DUI charges.

55-year-old Robert Susarenko allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel causing him to lose control and swerve up an embankment.

His passenger was killed when the car flipped onto its roof and burst into flames.

The crash triggered a SIG alert that shut down part of the freeway between Lomas Santa Fe and Manchester.

Those lanes have since reopened.

Susarenko was taken to the hospital.

Authorities say drugs and alcohol were factors in the crash.

He is expected to be charged with a DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
