Obama gearing up for fight with Republicans on immigration

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO ( CBS 8 ) - President Obama will soon announce sweeping changes to immigration policy which impacts millions of immigrants in the U.S despite heavy protests from Republicans.

President Obama's executive orders come as the GOP takes a majority lead and tips the balance of power after elections.

These orders are expected to roll out as soon as next week.

Obama wants to overhaul immigration and protect roughly 5 million unauthorized immigrants from being deported.

It would also possibly give out work permits to parents of children who are already American citizens to prevent them from being deported and separated from their families, according to administrative officials.

Part of the plan includes restructuring work orders for 12 thousand immigration border patrol agents.

But the White House is considering a stricter policy that would limit the benefits to people who have lived in the country for at least 10 years, which impacts about 2.5 million people.

On the heels of this highly controversial topic, the California DMV made a major announcement.

Starting in January, the agency will issue drivers licenses to unauthorized immigrants for the first time ever.

The Governor's goal is to create safer roads.

The DMV will extend Saturday hours, add staff and appointment slots.

That's an estimated 1.4 million drivers over the next three years.
