SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank is kicking off its holiday turkey drive.

On Friday, volunteers unloaded 750 turkeys donated to the food bank by Foster Farms that will help brighten the holidays for local families in need.

Food bank officials say proper nutrition is particularly important for children.

"The line between hunger and obesity is a very fine line and there's a saying in the food bank community: if you don't eat you can't learn, if you don't learn you can't earn," San Diego Food Bank President and CEO James Floros said. "So we're talking about breaking a cycle of poverty through supporting education and supporting education through proper nutrition for children."

The food bank serves about 370,000 San Diegans every month. That number is up about 50,000 from last year.
