Zoo celebrates first anniversary of elephant arrival

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An African elephant Friday celebrated the first anniversary of her arrival at the San Diego Zoo by chomping on treats of pineapple, flowers and banana stalks, park officials said.

Mila, 42, had been living at the Franklin Zoo & Wildlife Sanctuary in New Zealand, but she moved when the facility was shut down after the death of its founder.

According to the zoo, Mila was the only elephant in the entire country during her five-year stay at the Franklin Zoo. She hadn't been around other elephants for decades.

Animal care staff successfully introduced her into the herd at the San Diego Zoo, where officials said she is doing well.
