Copycat bandit stealing the Geezer's act

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – The search is on Tuesday for a bank robber who looks a lot like the Geezer Bandit. The FBI doesn't believe it's the same thief, but one who may be stealing his act.

The robbery took place at a Union Bank in Rancho Bernardo on Friday. The man was armed with a pistol and said he had a bomb.

"He pointed the pistol at the teller, he threatened her with that weapon, demanded money and basically said that if she didn't comply with his demands he was going to do serious bodily harm with the explosive device and also with the weapon," FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth said.

This robber is described as a white male in his mid to late 60s, around 5 foot 5 to 5 foot 6 with a medium build. He was wearing a light blue or grey jacket, light-colored hat, dark glasses and a purple zip-up sweater.

"We consider this bank robber to be armed and dangerous because one, he did use a pistol, he threatened the teller with that pistol, and he also threatened he had an explosive device which he put on the counter," Foxworth said.

This robber is similar to the infamous Geezer Bandit, who robbed 16 California banks between 2009 and 2012, 11 of them here in San Diego. He was also older and wore a hat with glasses. Some think he may have been wearing a mask to throw off police.

"Based on the investigation we've conducted so far, we don't believe this individual is the Geezer Bandit," Foxworth said.

The FBI says this is the 90th bank robbery of the year, and they've caught their suspect 62 percent of the time. They're hoping to up that average.

"Right now we're looking at this as a new bank robber who's robbed here for the first time in San Diego," Foxworth said.
