Several suspicious morning fires set in City Heights

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – There may be a serial arsonist on the loose, and it's putting residents in City Heights on edge. The latest fires happened early Wednesday morning.

The Metro Arson Strike Team searched the City Heights area after two suspicious fires were set early Wednesday morning.

The first happened at about 1 a.m. at the corner of Polk and Menlo avenues. A tarp covering a parked motorcycle was set on fire. Neighbors say they scared off the suspect as the fire was being lit. At about 2:45 a.m., someone set fire to a box spring in the 5300 block of El Cajon Boulevard.

Last week, six different fires were set in neighboring Chollas Creek, which is only about 10 blocks away from the latest fires. Many residents were evacuated from an apartment, after a suspect targeted a fence and palm tree, which caused power outages in the 4100 block of 50th Street.

Arson investigators are now trying to determine if the fires were started by the same person.

Resident Patrick Wollum hopes the person or people responsible are arrested before the fires escalate.

"I can't even say it. It's astounding to me. I hope they get caught, I hope they get prosecuted," he said.

San Diego firefighters say arson can become a life or death situation when fires escalate. If they're dealing with a serial arsonist, investigators believe their MO is to torch property very late at night or early in the morning hours, then flee.
