A bottlenose dolphin calf born at SeaWorld San Diego last month is a male, park officials announced Wednesday.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A bottlenose dolphin calf born at SeaWorld San Diego last month is a male, park officials announced Wednesday.

The determination was made after DNA of the mother's placental blood was analyzed, according to SeaWorld.

The calf, which will be named around the first of the year as part of a social media contest, is healthy and weighs 55 pounds. The young dolphin weighed 40 pounds when born Oct. 18.

The 80th successful birth of a dolphin at SeaWorld San Diego was to 13-year-old Sadie, who continues to nurse and bond with her offspring. The calf has been introduced to most of the other dolphins at the park and can be seen swimming at the Dolphin Stadium habitat.
