Sea turtle finds new home at Birch Aquarium

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – A rescued loggerhead sea turtle is adjusting to life at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla.

The juvenile turtle arrived Wednesday after a long flight from a rescue hospital in South Carolina.

This is the first time Birch Aquarium has welcomed a rehabilitated sea turtle to its collection of marine life. She was originally discovered injured at a New Jersey power plant, and because of her injuries, she will never be released into the wild again.

"She has some shell deformities that have prevented her from being able to survive and rear flipper paralysis, so because of that we decided hey we would love to help this sea turtle," Birch Aquarium Director of Husbandry Jenn Moffatt said.

The 100-pound turtle is expected to top 300 pounds. She will be ready for visitors in January.
