CALEXICO, Ca (CBS 8) – U.S Customs and Border Protection announced Monday that patrol agents from the El Centro Station seized 970 pounds of marijuana from a failed drug smuggling attempt.

At 8:07 a.m. Monday morning camera operators spotted a tan Infinity QX4 heading north across the United States and Mexican border and alerted agents assigned to the area.

After camera operators lost sight of the vehicle, agents continued to search for the vehicle and it was eventually found abandoned a quarter mile south of Highway 98.

The agent who found the vehicle conducted a search, discovering large plastic bundles inside the vehicle containing marijuana.

Agents identified and tracked the footprints of two suspects from the vehicle heading south towards the border.

Both suspects made it back into Mexico.

The agents seized a total of 80 bundles of marijuana, weighting 970.33 pounds with an estimated street value of $436,600.

The vehicle and the marijuana were handed over by the U.S Border Patrol to the DEA for further investigation.
