San Diego's plan to lift cap on number of taxi permits

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer signed a resolution Monday to lift the cap on the number of taxi permits issued in the city.

The proposal was passed by the City Council last week. Supporters say doing away with the cap will allow drivers who work for taxi companies to get their own permits. That way, they will be able to keep more of what they earn.

"Allow them to stop being employees, allow them to start being their own boss, to have their own business and to direct their own course in their careers," Councilwoman Marti Emerald said.

The resolution now goes to the MTS board for final approval.
