Demonstration shows how to safely fry a turkey

With thanksgiving just a couple of days away, there are many people planning to deep-fry their turkey.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - With thanksgiving just a couple of days away, there are many people planning to deep-fry their turkey.

But doing it wrong can have serious consequences.

The Fire Science Club at Southwestern College demonstrated the proper way to fry a turkey Tuesday morning. They say one of the biggest mistakes that causes fires is trying to cook the turkey while it is still frozen or wet. Another mistake is lowering the bird into the oil too fast.

The club recommends frying turkey outdoors, at least 10 feet away from buildings.

Also, be sure to keep a fire extinguisher on hand and wear long sleeves and fire-proof gloves.
