Father Joe's: Turkey with a side of compassion

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Father Joe's Villages served about 1,600 Thanksgiving dinners to people in need, and a team of dedicated volunteers worked hard through the night and all morning long to get it all ready.

Reginald McCoy lives in the village, and he didn't even stop to take a break to speak to us. They mean business – 266 pies need to be in the oven.

"Probably until midnight because we have to do a lot of baking, making sure we get it all done tonight and tomorrow because we don't want to be late," he said.

Also going in the oven are 160 turkeys, 600 pounds of potatoes, and 3,200 slices of bread for the dressing. It's all in a night's work.

"When you serve it to someone who has nothing, and that little kid goes 'Oh look mom, real food,' are you kidding me? You can't put a price on that," Father Joe Carroll said.

But he says it takes a lot of heart and soul, and money – about $6,000 for this Thanksgiving meal.

"When you carry it and show people having that meal, it eases the guilt of those eating at home who haven't mailed us a check yet," he said.
