TSA encouraging holiday travelers to be safe, smart

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The holiday travel season is upon us, and the Transportation Security Administration is reminding travelers to be safe and smart at the airport.

About 60,000 passengers per day are expected at Lindbergh Field through Sunday. Travelers are recommended to arrive to the airport at least 90 minutes before their departure, and 2 1/2 hours before international flights.

The TSA says one of the biggest problems they have at screenings is people bringing guns.

"About five guns every day are being found, so we're asking passengers to please take a look at your bags before you come to the airport and make sure you don't have any prohibited or illegal items when you come to the airport," TSA spokesperson Nico Melendez said.

Lindbergh Field has also launched a therapy dog program. The dogs and their handlers will roam the terminals and make themselves available for people who need to de-stress.
