SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An investigation is under way Monday into what sparked a house fire in San Carlos that displaced nine people and killed a family dog, authorities said.

The fire at 6965 Cowles Mountain Blvd. began in the home's garage shortly before 6:30 p.m. Sunday and took about 20 minutes to be knocked down, said San Diego fire-rescue Capt. Joe Amador.

The blaze caused an estimated $600,000 in damage but there were no human injuries, according to Amador.

Two families consisting of two adults and seven children had been living in the home, he said, adding that the American Red Cross was called to help the families find temporary housing.
