Success story: Family of 5 nearly doubles in size

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - They just weren't ready to be empty nesters. A local couple with three biological children knew they had more love to give, but never imagined their household would nearly double in size. They were a family of five, now they are a family of nine.

With their son Dane out of the house and their two daughters in high school, Janet and John felt the house was a little too quiet.

“I just know what, what's next and decided that what I'm here for is to be a mom and raise kids and so we decided to add to our family,” said Janet.

They started out by taking in one. Then five months later they added one more.

“Shortly after we had Natalie, we got a call that Andy needed a place, but just temporarily, and we were like of course, absolutely, so we picked him up,” said Janet.

Seven short weeks after that, they received a call that there was another special little girl. Jaelyn needed a temporary home as well, they were told, but as fate would have it, Janet and John ended up adopting all three.

“And then when we thought we were completely finished, we got a call that Jaelyn had a little brother,” said Janet.

Janet wasn't sure if John would agree.

“I said I have to call my husband at work, I thought he'd say absolutely not, and I called him, before I could get it out of my mouth he said, I don't even have to think about this, when can we go meet him,” explained Janet.

They met Mason that same day, and he became part of their family too. Mason is now seven. Jaelyn and Andy are eight and Natalie is nine.

Erin says the experience was life-changing:

“It was exciting, it was crazy at first, but I loved kids at that age, and I still do now. My sister and I both are both preschool teachers now, so it's kind of led us along that path too. So it's definitely changed my future as well and my career path.”

Bailey, who was 16 at the time, says her younger siblings have really persevered:

“That's been amazing to see them break through obstacles and things, and they've just grown and they're so smart and they can do things and it's really fun to watch them succeed.”

All four children were exposed to drugs in utero, so they struggled in the beginning, but they're all doing awesome now.”

Janet and John say all of their children are now blossoming and they hope their success story inspires others to adopt and change a child's life.

“I would just say absolutely open your heart and open your family. They bring so much joy and love to our family and we would just be incomplete without them, it's been a wonderful experience,” added Janet.
