Marine veteran desperate to bring her dog home

VISTA (CBS 8) – The search continues in the North County for a missing service dog. The German shepherd belongs to a former Camp Pendleton Marine who served in Afghanistan.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but every photo of Alexandra Melnick and her dog Kai scream one: love.

"I was in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2012," Alexandra said.

For Alexandra, Kai isn't just a best friend. He's also the Marine Corps veteran's service dog.

"He soothes my PTSD. He soothes my anxiety. I not only need my best friend and my dog back, I need my service dog back to go through the day," she said.

Kai disappeared Friday while Alexandra was visiting family out of town for Thanksgiving. A friend checked on the 1 1/2-year-old dog in the morning and he was fine, but when the friend came back that evening, Kai was gone.

"She checked all the bedrooms, she checked the backyard, she checked the garage. She checked inner fences, she checked the bathroom – everywhere. She checked under the rug and there was no dog," Alexandra said.

She immediately went door to door in her Vista neighborhood, but no one saw Kai. Alexendra then she flooded the community with flyers, which led to a couple leads but still no confirmed sightings.

"We've spent so much money in copies and they're going everywhere and now it's raining, and all the copies, all the flyers are down. So we're working on putting them inside businesses, inside doors so people can see them. We've covered the malls," she said.

Alexandra also created a Bring Kai Home Facebook page to generate awareness and give people a place to leave tips, and she's set up a GoFundMe page - to help pay for more flyers and a growing reward, which she hopes will generate more public interest.

Kai does not have a collar on, but he is microchipped. Alexandra's hoping he'll turn up at a shelter or a vet's office, where he'll be scanned so he can return home soon to many hugs.
