NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (AP) - Authorities in San Diego County say a robber stole cash and about $400,000 in loose diamonds from a store owner in a mall parking lot.

National City police Sgt. Antonion Ybarra says the owner of National Jewelers was walking to his car at Westfield Plaza Bonita store Wednesday evening when the robber came up behind him.

The victim says the robber put a metal object against his back and told him to empty his pockets.

Authorities say the store owner handed over $240 and was then ordered to empty his jacket. The owner was carrying a bag of loose diamonds, which he gave to the thief, who ran off.

No suspects have been identified.

U-T San Diego reports mall surveillance cameras weren't recording at the time.
