CHP takes down carjacking suspect following dramatic freeway chase

SAN DIEGO (CBS News 8) California Highway Patrol officers took a carjacking suspect into custody Thursday night following an hour-long chase that began in Riverside County and ended along the I-15 in Rancho Penasquitos.

Authorities say the suspect carjacked a Dodge Caravan in Menifee at 6:30 Thursday evening, leading to a pursuit that began on I-215 and continued southbound, ending just north of the Mercy Road exit.

At several points throughout the pursuit, the suspect waved his head and hands out of the driver side window, simulating a weapon.

Officers say he also threw a gun out of the minivan along the freeway somewhere in Riverside County.

CHP used spike strips to slow the suspect, who eventually came to a halt along the freeway. He was taken into custody without incident.
